Advanced Maternal Age Explained in TCM

Over the age of 35 is defined as Advanced Maternal Age, which is associated with a decrease in chances of conception and an increased risk of complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

This is due to several physiological changes that occur in women as they age:

  • Their ovarian reserve decreases, which refers to the number and quality of eggs in the ovaries. This can make it more difficult for women to conceive, even with assisted reproductive technologies such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

  • The quality of the eggs decreases. This can lead to chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus, such as Down Syndrome.

  • The risk of miscarriage increases. This is thought to be due to a decline in the quality of eggs, as well as the constitution decreases.

  • Risk of developing gestational diabetes and high blood pressure during pregnancy. These conditions can lead to complications such as preterm birth, which is associated with a higher risk of health problems for the baby, including respiratory distress syndrome and developmental delays.

In conclusion, women at an advanced maternal age are at an increased risk of several complications, including difficulty conceiving, chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus, miscarriage, gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and preterm birth.

It is important for women of advanced maternal age to receive proper prenatal care and for healthcare providers to closely monitor for these potential complications.
